Swing trading journal: how to track multi-day positions, swaps, and trend capture

intent: trade · Published

Swing trading captures larger price swings over days or weeks, placing particular emphasis on holding-period variables such as: overnight financing costs, weekend gap risk, earnings catalyst dates, and emotional patience during natural pullbacks. A dedicated swing trading journal tracks net carry costs, multi-timeframe confirmation, and trailing stop discipline across the entire holding lifecycle.

Why multi-day position holding requires specialized trade journaling

Holding trades across multiple market sessions subjects your positions to overnight news cycles, macroeconomic rate decisions, and financing friction. In forex and CFD markets, overnight financing (swap) can erode a substantial portion of your gross profit or provide an unexpected carry tailwind. In equity markets, holding through earnings announcements or weekend headlines introduces discontinuous price gaps that bypass normal stop orders.

Logging your swing trades in a structured journal separates gross technical performance from net holding costs, so you can inspect recorded results after financing. A journal alone does not establish a statistically reliable edge or predict future returns.

Essential swing trading variables to record for every position

To build an actionable log of your multi-day campaigns, track these four critical variables alongside standard entry and exit prices:

Hypothetical swing trading campaign and carry cost breakdown

This hypothetical recordkeeping example compares two swing positions in a 50,000 USD account. The USD/JPY position has planned price-only stop risk of approximately 357.14 USD (0.7143% of equity); the MSFT position has 350 USD (0.70%) of planned price-only risk. These are illustrative inputs, not actual trades or a trading recommendation:

Calculation conventions: 1 standard lot is 100,000 base-currency units, so 0.45 lots of USD/JPY is 45,000 USD and each 0.01 JPY pip is worth 450 JPY, not a fixed USD amount. Planned price-only risk is 45,000 × (152.40 − 151.20) = 54,000 JPY, converted at the assumed stop fill of 151.20 JPY per USD: 357.142857 USD. Gross profit is 45,000 × (155.80 − 152.40) = 153,000 JPY, converted at the assumed exit fill of 155.80: 982.028241 USD. Add the assumed 48.60 USD carry credit and subtract 9.00 USD fees for 1,021.628241 USD net; divide by unrounded initial risk for 2.86R. Figures are rounded only for display. Carry and fees are illustrative USD totals, not current broker quotes. Entry, stop and exit are assumed executable prices; additional slippage and currency-conversion fees are excluded. Stops do not guarantee fills or cap losses, and actual broker conversion rates and charges can differ. MSFT uses the same price-only risk convention, excluding costs from initial 1R. Tracking multi-day metrics in your trading journal metrics and evaluating patience in weekly trading journal reviews helps you document holding costs and compare recorded outcomes. It does not guarantee trend capture, prevent losses or establish a repeatable edge.
